    Always carry mace!

I don't think there is any excuse not to have a can of mace on you at all times. Especially women! It is an inexpensive and possibly life-saving product. Keep it in your hand or or keep it easily accessible and use it when needed.

Mace is a great tool. In some parts of the world it is illegal so you have to be careful about that. Your life is more important than getting in trouble with the law though so you should do as you wish.

If you can't carry mace there are lots of other implements that will work just as well. Any kind of spray should do, even perfume if sprayed in the eyes.

That's a great alternative. I second that idea. If it's illegal to carry mace in your area, carry perfume or even something like bug spray maybe. That is sure to do the trick.

Bug spray is an excellent idea! Can you imagine how painful that would be to squirt in someone's eye. Mace may be a little more compact though, and easier to handle and conceal. But I do second choice bug spray.

I need to get some. In my head when thinking about it I imagine fumbling with the mace or dropping it. Is this a realistic fear?

I think carrying mace or an alternative, is great advice. I always carry mace, and I have bought some for my sisters, too. If you are afraid of fumbling with the mace, maybe you can practice pulling it out of your purse.

I'm a man and I always carry mace. the can is small and easy to fit in your palm when walking. The thing I like best about it is that if God forbid your attacker gets it and uses it against you, it's a non-lethal weapon.

Just be careful with Mace or alternative sprays. If you're randomly assaulted and have it crammed in the bottom of your purse or handbag, it won't help you. You'd also have to be mindful of the wind - way to make things worse to accidentally spray at your attacker and end up being sprayed instead! I have Mace just in case, but I'd rather use self defense techniques rather than an object that could easily make the situation worse if you aren't prepared.

Mace and pepper spray will have the same initial effect on an attacker. The difference is that someone who is sprayed with mace sometimes needs medical attention. If you can't find mace, then pepper spray will work just as well.
