A) This is a community which was created aimed specifically at the South African public. We would like to help educate the South African public in the best ways of defending themselves from attack as well as leading a safer and more secure lifestyle. Q) So is this another MMA/Fighting forum? A) Far from it. We are not about fighting, we are about surviving. There are already plenty of resources out there on things like MMA, contact sports and different martial arts. While knowledge of the technical skills is vital in any threat situation we are here for people in all shapes and sizes and all levels of self defence expertise. There are plenty of South Africans who do not have the time or resources to attend classes or are too intimidated to do so. While we encourage anybody who can to get hands on experience we are here for those who would like to learn and get an idea of what self defence is about from the comfort and privacy of their own home or office. Q) What about politics and other racy topics that are usually associated with any mention of self defence. A) This is one aspect we would categorically try and steer clear of. There are plenty of resource discussing the political, social and religious events in south Africa therefore there is no need to create another one. Our aim is to provide our members and visitors with the skills and abilities to defend themselves from an attacker no matter who he or she might be. Let me illustrate with an example. You walk into your living room and suddenly you see a guy with a knife or gun standing there right in front of you. Now, in the few seconds you have to react, will you be thinking about what socio-economic circumstances brought him there? Does he/she have the constitutional or moral right to be in your house? Does anything in either your or their personal history warrant his presence in your living room? My first guess there would be a big fat NO! What you want to know is how to stop him from hurting you or your family and how to make him go away. Now this is where we come in. We would like to help inform and advise people on how to defend themselves in those kind of situations and steer them to the right professional self defence instructors and service providers who can teach them in person. Another important point to note is that politics, race, religion and similar topics always invoke very emotional responses from all sides. We want to be a source of information and not a source of emotional turmoil. Q) Are you or the team behind the Self Defence South Africa community self defence or martial arts instructors? A) No we are not. And on that point I would like to add that the none of us claim to have all the answers or pretend to know everything. We are all South Africans with a concern for our safety and that of our families and as such we have created a community for the exchange of information on the subject. Please also see our disclaimer. Q) Ok so I am here to learn. Apart from other people here to learn does anybody have real authority on the subject? A) Yes, we are encouraging self defence instructors form all around the country to come and join our discussions and help create a safer environment for all. Q) So why would instructors want to join in the community? A) The answer to this is twofold: a) For the betterment of the South African public, your knowledge and expertise could help someone in a dangerous situation. b) For the more business oriented , simple, it.s self-promotion. Q) Self-promotion? More on that please. A) There are many self defence schools and classes in South Africa. Most of them are unknown and unadvertised. We would like to offer all self defence instructors a chance to take part in our community and at the same time promote their services. This is done by having a link on our directory of South African Self Defence Services as well as in the forum signatures. In addition to that the instructors can advertise their upcoming events and seminars as well as share with the rest of us stories, successes and pictures of past events. Q) Now why exactly would your directory and forum signatures be helpful in promoting a service. A) Answer is simple. Most people just advertise a service, some even include testimonials. Now while this can be beneficial in some cases, how many testimonials do you trust without actually experiencing the service for yourself. Now this is where we come in. When a self defence instructor takes part in our community discussions and is able help or to suggest a course of action to our members that is the best kind of testimonial you can have. Would you rather trust someone with an anonymous testimonial (some of which you can buy off the internet) of how great they are or see someone who is actively being helpful and providing useful advice. My guess would be the latter as if the person knows what he or she is talking about then they might be worthwhile checking out in real life. Q) Ok so the instructors are sold on this, I bet the advertising costs a ton of money. A) Not at all, this community was created with the primary goal of helping South Africans defend themselves and all the guys involved with running this site are personally passionate about the subject. As such , currently the only thing we ask from the instructors, is that they become active members of our community and help spread awareness of self defence. To that end any instructor who has signed up and follow the instructor forum rules can advertise on our services directory, have a link in their signature and promote their upcoming events. Q) Sounds great, is this service only for self defence instructors and schools? A) Not at all, we are a well-rounded community and would like to encompass all aspects of .securing. your life, from unarmed combat, through using tazers and other devices right down to safer and defensive driving and securing your home. To that end we also welcome all suppliers of self defence equipment, educational materials and services to join our community and take part. The same advertising and posting rules apply as to self defence instructors. All guests and members are encouraged to review this document periodically as it may change from time to time. |
